SELF-DOCUMENTARY

Role : Director, Cameraman, Scriptwriter, Editor
Score : 'The Lost Song' by David Gray

The short-self documentary about the reason me pursuing career in broadcasting, made for documentary class. The first concept was totally different, telling more about me and my backgrounds. Then I realized that it was too long and meaningless. So I scratched the idea, trying to focus more on what truly inspired me as filmmaker instead of me. So I grabbed the camera, walked through downtown, and shot everything that caught my attention randomly. I was quite satisfied with the result as this short documentary became my most personal and passionate project, yet simple and spontaneous, and above all define me as filmmaker.

Article 4 : The Selby - Enter The Homes of Artists Around The World

Article for Greymanner ( Nov 27, 09 )

I'm always jealous of people who seem to have it all, not in terms of standard values like money, career, family and all that jazz. I'm talking about people who really pursue their passion, do what they really want to do in life, and are content with it. This may sound easy, but it's actually not. Some people go through years and years of just trying to figure out what they really want in life, and most people actually give up before they finally find the answer, fade into the background, decide to live for function over passion. Shame, but I believe these people featured on The Selby know better.

The Selby is a website invented by Todd Selby, a New York based photographer, blogger and fashion celebrity, who features photographs, paintings and videos of interesting people and their creative spaces. From one photograph to another, you can see each of these unique individuals - indie musicians, artists, designers and actors, from around the world, inviting us to enter their creative world framed well within a 16:9 aspect ratio. Well, I know nothing about these people, and I am pretty sure they are still real people with their own real problems, but it is just amazing how still art can demolish any kind of objectivity in creating a certain impression on how one's life looks like, where everything that matters is what's in the frame. If that is how you want people to look at you, that is what you are.

Through his art, Todd Selby is not only giving us an opportunity to enter the wonderful home of these interesting characters, but also... their minds. And for this, I would say these pictures are not just visually entertaining, but also inspiring - it made me forget about the terrible colour scheme of my bedroom walls and how boring my job really is.

Check out The Selby here.

Article 3 : Rick Owens' Fur Line 'Palais Royal' F/W 2009

Article for Greymanner ( Sept 11,09 )

Rick Owens is an Avant-garde American designer who was born and currently working in Paris, some people maybe never even heard of his name before. But yes, Rick Owens is a multi-millionaire fashion designer adored by celebrities and well known among the fashion community, some of the names are Courtney Love, Helena Bonham Carter and Madonna. His design is defined by his vigorous taste of grunge rock and dark-glamor, transforming fashion into a cutting edge haute-couture. And as always, his collection is always remarkable, some articles and media even named him 'The next Karl Lagerfeld'. I know my fellow friend, Alyssa Kwan probably has more things to say when it comes to woman's fashion, but I am easily fascinated by well-composed fashion photography, especially the one as good as Rick Owens' Palais Royal lookbook for Fall/Winter 2009, and yet I need to blurt out some words.

I don't know if Rick Owens has came up with any 'name' for this campaign, but I won't be bothered to find out because I have came up with my own 'name', 'Snow Queen'. Maybe because the model's look fits the description or the fact that I am just too shallow as to relate any F/W fashion campaign with the word 'snow'. But that's the first word that popped into my head the second I put my eyes onto this. The sophisticated, asymmetrical design with long-drapy materials made of high quality leather and fur, looks magical in dark-grey color palette.

Speaking of 'fur', I am very sorry if you happen to be one of the green peace workers or Anti-Fur Activist. 'Palais Royal' is a FUR line by Rick Owens, so this post might offend some of you. I am an animal lover and it breaks my heart to imagine any kind of animals has to be harmed in order to give bunch of greedy humans a fake self image over insecurity issues. But apparently some people just couldn't look away from the hypnotic stare of the 'Snow Queen' and resist the charm, even if it means they have to hold a club on the left hand and a baby seal on the right hand. But anyway, That's gonna be a whole different post. Why don't we just leave it to the expert and just sit and admire this masterpiece for now. ( photos from http://www.rickowens.eu/ )

Article 2 : The Sims & Fashion

Article for Greymanner ( Dec 13,2009 ) :

Before you go through this post, let me warn you that it won't be for everyone. If you happen to appreciate computer games, have too much free time on your hands, and still care about fashion, like me, then you might be interested. And if you are, I'm assuming you are already familiar with The Sims, the most popular PC /Mac based simulation game series which lets you take the role of 'God' and create virtual humans, then...you control them and watch them go to school, find a job, get a wife, have sex, buy the latest fashions, etc.

And after the latest installment of The Sims series, The Sims 3, it seems as though the fashion industry had finally noticed that not all people who play computer games wear nerd glasses and Star-Wars t-shirts, because there's quite a big niche for fashion in the virtual world as well. It was proven by H&M, one of the big players in the mass-produced fashion industry right now, who collaborated with Electronic Arts in launching the H&M Fashion Runway Expansion Pack back in 2007. H&M Fashion Runway lets you download H&M fashion stuff & accessories for your Sims, and allows you to submit your own designs or trade online. And the result was a big hit, marking the rise of fashion in an 'alternate reality'.

And now, there are many independent websites and online forums that have broken into the market and taken virtual fashion to the next level (my fave site is allaboutstyle). They take inspiration from the actual designer's masterpieces from the runway and recreate them online. Now your Sims are not just limited to wearing those ugly pre-made default costumes (probably designed by Electronic Arts geeks). With no charge card and a moderate knowledge of internet technology, you can download outfits from Gucci, Chanel, Oscar De La Renta, Valentino, etc. Maybe you can't afford those fancy fashions, but your Sim can. Who cares if you are a big loser in the real world if you are an A-list celebrity with the best style in Sim-town!
